HAIR TYPING: MY THOUGHTS

There are two types of hair charts. The most frequently used hair typing chart is by Andre walker. His hair typing chart is rather simple. It ranges from 'Type 2 hair down to type 4.

Example of the Chart

Most women, when transitioning are eager to know their hair type. I was one! Many women are relaxed from a very tender age and have no clue what their actually hair type is. So know what it looks like and what their curl patter is like is actually a big deal to many.
Some however, get too caught up in hair typing, hoping to see a silky pattern and sometimes are disappointed during transitioning or even worst, after their big chop. Which why I hopped off the "hair typing bandwagon" Let me tell you why!

During transitioning, I went to a Hair Day at the beauty supply store I get all my products from. I hair my hair tested by a Trichologist and I asked her my hair type and she said I was in the type 4 ranger. Very well, I started doing research on this type of hair. What products I could use and all that.
On my Big chop day, I panicked because the little curl pattern I saw when transitioning was no where to be found. No curl pattern and all I was left with was dry, frizzy hair. I started to panic and even cried!

The day of My Big chop

As you can see, I was depressed! I still had relaxed ends but my hair hair texture was nothing near to what I was seeing while transitioning. I was real confused. I was even considering getting a relaxer the following weekend because I felt I looked hideous. But my sister who had accompanied  me to the salon that day encourage me to get extentions, because my hair texture would indeed change. I decided to get the extentions and hold out for a couple months

Afro Kinky Braids

Soon after getting the braids, they started falling out. My hair was super short. and I did not get the tightly done. So within a week and a half, I had to take down the braid. I got depressed again. Said I will be getting a relaxer the weekend. Couple days Before the appointment, I asked myself "why did I even bother to transition, and cut my hair?" So I then cut the remaining pieces detangled and pulled my hair into a puff.

My First Time wearing out My Natural Hair
I still thought I looked weird. I still have not seen any curl pattern and owned having "4c" hair. BUT... by m third month into being natural, I saw a change in my hair. Everyone around me started saying how much my hair has changed. I started seeing curls. My hair started grown in an umbrella form and I was even more confused. I then found out I have 3 different hair texture. WHAT A SHOCK TO ME?! I then asked my mother if my hair was like this and she then said it's going to get curlier, and she was indead right. If I were to type my hair, I would say I 3c,4a,4b.
At first, I still deep conditioned, but was eager to see curl patter. so I would paste my hair in so much gel. But now even if I do not use get, the curl pattern is evident. I do not even need gel. I rarely do wash n gos. I keep my hair up and stretch my hair more frequently.

All I care about now is the actual health of my hair. I do not care for texture or typing anymore because the more your hair grow the more changes you experience, that is to me! Its  does not matter the texture, type or length. Every hair is indeed different but all is beautiful. Healthy hair over typing and length.

I do understand the eagerness of wanting to know your texture and that some women will still like to hair type but on the other hand, be the same about keeping your hair healthy. Our hair is our crown! That is what I live by.
