POROSITY TALK: LOW POROSITY

So my last post I talked a little about all three levels of porosity. In this post, I will go in dept about low porosity hair, how to build a regimen and products you can use to help maintain your hair.

Low Porosity hair is when the Cuticle Layer are tightly bound with overlapping scales that lay flat. This type of hair is considered to be healthy because it is rather shiny. It also repels moisture when you try to wet it and is a hard to process since it resists penetration of chemical. Eg. Color processes
It requires a lot of moisture rich in emollients such as Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil  and Coconut Oil. It also benefits from humectants. Using lighter liquid based products such as  hair milks that will not sit on the hair leaving it oily or greasy.
Alot of protein treatments on this type of hair tends to cause build up, leaving a stiff, straw-like feeling. Protein free daily conditioners with humectant and protein free deep conditioners weekly with moderate heat.

Regimen For Low Porosity Hair

Cleanse/Clarify- Since products do not absorb fast or alot, cleansing the hair help to prevent build up. This will ensure products have a clean surface to work and penetrate the hair. Many naturals tend to run from shampoos but shampooing once or twice a month will help keep your hair clean. You could use a low sulfate or sulfate free shampoos.

Pree-poo-  Use light oils for pree treatments. Some conditioners as pree-poos might be a little too heavy.                         Eg. Sunflower Oil, Jojoba and Grapeseed Oil

Moisturizing Deep Treatments- Deep conditioning weekly with moisturizing deep conditioner to ensure your hair has enough moisture.

Steam/Heat Application- The type of heat I am refering to is heat from a Huetiful steamer or Hooded dryer. Heat helps to lift cuticles to help conditioner penetrate the hair. If you do not have these types of equipment, you could simply warm a towel or even your deep conditioner in your microwave and cover with plastic cap and towel.

Humectants- These draw moisture to the hair from the air. Honey and Glycerin are to great natural humectants which are effective in carrying out that job.

Lighter Oil & Products-  As mentioned before, the use lighter products will not cause build up easily. Lighter oils will penetrate easily since heavier oils will not fully penetrate the hair.

Moisturize- Moisturize and sealing is essential and also ensure to use a leave in conditioner.

As for Protein treatments, this can be done once a month for balance. Yogurt is great for a protein treatment  at home.Yogurt has lactic acids which hydrates hair and it molecules are small enough to actually penetrate hair. ensure to cleanse after to remove the scent after.
