SUMMER HAIR CARE

I love summer but hate this heat! You might think I am crazy but Jamaica is almost always hot and  even hotter from May to September. And that takes a toll on both skin and hair. During  the summer, my hair gets drier, duller and unmanageable. How do I cope? A change of regimen? No, Just a few adjustments and maybe a change of hair products. Here is what I do!

PREE-POO

I found that not missing this step during this time of the year is crucial! The product I use is my Homemade Banana Hair Masque. I will be making a post on how to make this recipe. You can use any conditioner that geared to be used as a Pree-poo or pre-wash treatment. Or you can also you any conditioner that is moisturizing as a pree poo.
  • I find bananas to be very moisturizing to the hair and its is very to detangle with this pree-poo masque. It immediately detangles and defines my curls.
  • A Hot Oil treatment is also a perfect pree-wash or Pree poo treatment. Gives hair shine
  USE A MOISTURIZER
Not many naturals use a moisturizer but I am sure that this is one product that has to be included in my hair regimen. I have two moisturizer or leave-ins that I use in my hair daily or whenever I choose to re-moisturize or refresh my hair. These two are the CURLS Blueberry Bliss Reperative Leave-in Conditioner and Blue Magic Carrot Oil Leave- in Conditioner. These two are my new Staple leave-ins / Moisturizers. They add that boost of moisture that is needed during the hot and dry climate. They both leave my hair moisturize days at a time. Reviews on both products with be coming shortly.
KEEP HAIR CLEAN
I found that since I am using more products during the summer, I have to use some sort of cleanser to free my hair and scalp from build up and grease. I use my Homemade co wash and a Shampoo on a weekly basis. Of-course, I do rotate between the two. You might be saying that using a Shampoo defeats the purpose of keeping the hair moisturized, but doing a pree poo, using a mild shampoo and moisturizing afterwards, makes my hair lighter and more manageable. A clean hair and scalp will help prevent acne breakouts for me. All that sweat and product build up can slow hair growth and promote a very itchy scalp.
DEEP CONDITIONING
This is a fundamental step in every hair care regimen and every hair texture. This is key to maintaining health and balance to the hair. Ensuring you have a a balance of both protein and moisture in your regimen is key. I find that doing a protein treatment every 4 to 6 weeks during summer is enough for my hair, even now that my hair is Color Treated. Remember to follow up with a moisturizing treatment after each protein treatment. And for the rest of the time, I do use a Moisturizing Deep conditioner or Masque in my hair.
Sometimes, after I pree poo and Cowash I do not need to do a deep conditioning treatment again. Since my pree poo is already like a deep conditioner. I just rinse co wash and style.
STYLERS
This step is not one that I am strict on. My hair is mostly in a Wash n Go but I am picky which gels or puddings I use. I hardly ever use Eco Styler gel because I find it to be a little too strong and drying for my hair. So, I use the  Proline Xtreme Gel and Ors Smooth n Hold pudding Creme Gel. These two products are staples for years. They are not drying and do not leave my hair crunchy. I sometimes use both product together and my hair definition stays for a 5 days or a week. But since they are both stylers, I prefer to use a leave in and then style with whichever I please.
  • I do put my hair in a puff or bun for a few days out of the week as a Protective styling. I hardly ever manipulate my hair by doing braid outs, updos or so. Always Wash n gos,  Buns and sometimes a Half up- half down style. I get headaches EASILY so these three makes me comfortable and get less headaches.
Seems quite long but very effective for me.  In the cooler months, I have a less hectic Regimen . But for now, this is what I do to keep my hair shiny, bouncy and moisturized. Don't  have  a Summer Hair Regimen? Feel free to use my steps above and see if you can make 'life easier'. You can also tweak my summer regimen and  use hair products to suit your hair  and it's needs.

It took me months to understand how to manage my hair and find products that worked for me. Not every products that other Naturals or Youtuber rave about will actually work for you.

Happy Summer Guys!!
